Advice on first draft editing: A writer of books has to come to think of the first draft as source material. Consider the fiber metaphor: Thread is woven into fabric. That fabric is then taken, cut, sewn and shaped to make a garment. The first draft takes the thread and weaves it into fabric. To make the fabric into a garment, you’ve got to edit.
