What is content editing?

The function of a content editor is all in the name: to assess, analyze, and critique a manuscript’s content. What is there, on the page; we look at the elements of narrative fiction and of non-fiction, and what is missing? These are our concerns.

Our service is designed to bring you an unbiased perspective on the work you have produced, how it succeeds, and where it may need strengthening.  Our content edit process consists of a careful reading of your manuscript, the product of which will be a written set of responses to your work and suggestions for improvements, and a consultation/dialogue regarding your writing.

One of our goals is to help maintain your focus on being creative and professional with your writing. To do so we apply the mindset of "elemental reading".
Your book is done. Now you need someone to read it.

When writing a work of any length, you lose yourself in it. A little like becoming a parent, when your baby is born you stand in awe of the miracle of its existence, blinded to the peculiarities that others will notice right away. This is normal. It’s also inevitable.
(Luckily, if your story is missing a little toe, you can write one in.)

Ask any accomplished writer and she’ll tell you that a work isn’t done until it has been read and revised. A baby isn't deemed healthy until the doctor has given it a good slap to make it cry. Your book is your baby, we understand that, and we want to slap it to make it cry, or, that is to say, we want to help you make sure it's healthy.

Editing is the only way.

The Ideal Reader

If you are very lucky, you have a longstanding friend who majored in English, who works as a professional writer, and who has both the time and the inclination to give your work a detailed reading and provide you with friendly feedback.

Most of us aren’t that lucky. But, no need to fret. The content editing of Poetic Wax boasts each of the qualities of the ideal reader, short of the longstanding friendship.

A lesson all of us learn as writers is that we have to improve without the help of our friends. We have to find – and sometimes create – opportunities for feedback, criticism, and dialogue. Poetic Wax may be that opportunity for you.
We’ll provide you with specific suggestions and detailed notes regarding:

Fiction

                     Character Development

                     Plot & Structure

                     Voice, Tone, & Consistency

Style,  Motif, & Theme (Sub & Super Text)

                     Diagnostics

Non-Fiction

                                Structure

                                Style

                                Voice, Tone & Consistency

                                Clarity & Message

Elemental Reading

The critical philosophy of elemental reading is concerned with the cornerstones of literature (and book writing). The focus is systematic – in a way that supports, explores, and reifies the artistry of writing. Elemental reading, simply put, is a reading method that enables a detailed response to any piece of writing, from the most sophisticated, multi-layered novel to the simplest book of recipes.
